From 90210 Star to Anti-aging Expert: Ian Ziering's New Career Selling Nu Skin

Ian Ziering has always looked young for his age. Heck, as Steve Sanders on the original "Beverly Hills 90210" he was playing a teen way into his late twenties and, today, at almost 47, he still looks pretty darn good. Why? Well, we're not sure, but maybe his latest career move has something to do with his youthful glow and nearly wrinkle-free skin. Ziering has apparently gotten into the skin care biz.

Seems that while Tori's been off having babies with Dean, Jennie's been "Dancing" and Brian's been marrying the Sexiest Woman in the Galaxy, Ian (remember, he pronounces it EYE-un), has been selling Nu Skin anti-aging products and, according to the MorristownGreen.com website, recommends using their "battery powered device designed to pump 'galvanic current' through your pores.

Ziering returned to his native New Jersey earlier this week to "pitch" the Nu Skin line – but, oddly wouldn't identify it by name in the local paper for fear that it would "undermine other area sales reps."

The ever gallant Ziering told MorristownGreen.com that he hasn't abandoned acting for skin care but that the two now go hand-in-hand. “This is in addition to acting,” he told the paper. “I found this to be a great way to leverage my success to help other people. As an actor, you know that every act has a closing curtain. I’m always looking for additional revenue streams. This represents the cutting edge in (anti-aging) research.”

In a stacyknows.com blog back in February, Ziering explained how he became a Nu Skin convert. "While traveling in "Hollywood" circles, you can be sure I've tried every cream, scrub and magic potion there is out there to keep my appearance competitive. While in Utah, I did half of my face with the Galvanic Spa and I was shocked at how much better it looked than the other side. New Studies Show Significant Anti-Aging Benefits of Cordyceps

New research from Nu Skin Enterprises, Inc. (NYSE:NUS) and its research partner LifeGen Technologies reveals specific anti-aging properties of Cordyceps sinensis (Cs-4), a mushroom traditionally believed to be an anti-aging herb in China. One investigation demonstrates Cs-4’s ability to combat age-related changes in gene expression in muscle and brain tissue. Two additional laboratory studies identify Cs-4’s positive impact on healthy lifespan due to overall positive benefits on energy metabolism, fatigue and endurance, as identified in previous studies.

“We’re making great breakthroughs in gene expression science that have application in the fields of health and longevity,” said Joe Chang, Ph.D., Nu Skin chief scientific officer and executive vice president of product development. “These studies with our research partner LifeGen Technologies help validate the critical role gene expression modulation plays in the aging process. “Because one of the earliest manifestations of human aging is a decline in vitality that begins as early as 30 years of age, we are targeting youth gene clusters that affect cellular mitochondria – the energy factories of the cells. Steve Wood, Ph.D., R.D., director of global research for Nu Skin’s nutritional supplement brand, Pharmanex, presented research generated through Nu Skin’s partnership with LifeGen Technologies at the Biology of Aging Gordon Research Conference in Les Diablerets, Switzerland in August. The research reported effects of Cs-4 supplementation on the expression of genes in mice related to mitochondrial aging in skeletal muscle and brain tissue. Key conclusions presented at the conference include:
·         The identification of age-associated nuclear gene expression related to mitochondria in muscle and brain tissue;
·         Cs-4 opposed the age-related changes of expression in several of those genes; and
·         Cs-4 opposed the effects of aging in multiple biochemical pathways (identified with gene ontology pathway analysis).

Angela Mastaloudis, Ph.D., senior scientist for Nu Skin’s nutritional supplement brand, Pharmanex, presented two studies at the elite Oxygen Club of California 2010 World Congress and received the prestigious DSM Nutraceutical Research Award. Josh Zhu, Ph.D., M.D., senior director for Pharmanex research and development at Nu Skin, was the lead scientist on the research. Conclusions of the three-year lifespan and antioxidant laboratory studies found that:
·         Cs-4 extended the maximal and average lifespan of the population studied; and
·         Cs-4 supplementation significantly improved antioxidant protection and reduced oxidative damage caused by an oxidative stressor.

Is ageLOC Really a Billion Dollar Discovery?

ageLOC is a new scientific platform based on genetics whereby it is able to identify the genes that are related to aging and then "reset" those genes to a more youthful state. Until now, most nutritional and pharmaceutical companies have been trying to find that one "mother" gene. What Nu Skin has discovered is that one gene does not control aging but rather groups of genes acting together. These groups of genes have been labelled as, ‘YOUTH GENE CLUSTERS’ and this new discovery is able to not only identify them (which no other company has been able to do) but also influence the expression of them which results in reversing the aging process

There are two significant factors that contribute to ageLOC's uniqueness:
  1. It is able to IDENTIFY the groups of genes in the human body that effect aging. It uses a patented algorithm that is able to locate the genes known to be the source of aging. This is a big deal because there are around 25,000 genes in the human genome and nobody has been able to find a process to identify all the ones that effect aging.
  2. Once the genes have been identified, it is able to RESET the Youth Gene Clusters to a more youthful state or condition. It's important to note that ageLOC is not altering the genes, but rather influencing their expression, regulating the genes as they work together to make you feel younger both on the inside and on the outside.
